چکیده

THE INCREASING clinical use of hexamethonium, a ganglion blocking agent, makes desirable a detailed knowledge of its acute hemodynamic effects in normotensive man. Recent work on dogs' indicates that the hexamethonium-induced fall in arterial pressure is accompanied by significant decrease in cardiac output with increase in the calculated total peripheral resistance. Accordingly, the authors concluded that the decrease in arterial pressure was due to the reduction in the cardiac output. Such findings require confirmation in humans. The present investigation was designed to serve this purpose.

Role of the thalamic parafascicular nucleus cholinergic system in the modulation of acute corneal nociception in rats

The present study investigated the effects of microinjections of acetylcholine (a cholinergic agonist), physostigmine (a cholinesterase inhibitor), atropine (an antagonist of muscarinic cholinergic receptors) and hexamethonium (an antagonist of nicotinic cholinergic receptors) into the parafascicular nucleus of thalamus on the acute corneal nociception in rats. Acute corneal nociception was ind...

The hemodynamic effects of hypotensive drugs in man. IV. 1-Hydrazinophthalazine.

Further data are presented concerning the unusual hemodynamic effects of 1 -hiydraziniophthalazine. Previous observations demonstrating a marked increase in cardiac output in noimotensive subjects are confirmed in hypertensive patients. The splanchnic vascular bed is one of the sites of increased blood flow. The similarity between the hemodynamic effects of 1-bydr.azinophthalazine and pyirogens...

Sympathetic activation in rats with L-NAME-induced hypertension.

We evaluated the hemodynamic pattern and the contribution of the sympathetic nervous system in conscious and anesthetized (1.4 g/kg urethane, iv) Wistar rats with L-NAME-induced hypertension (20 mg/kg daily). The basal hemodynamic profile was similar for hypertensive animals, conscious (N = 12) or anesthetized (N = 12) treated with L-NAME for 2 or 7 days: increase of total peripheral resistance...

Effects of Lidocaine on the Acute Hemodynamic Response to Electroconvulsive Therapy

ABSTRACT Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been used widely to treat psychiatric disease. ECT under anesthesia is associated with hypertension and tachycardia. The cardiovascular effects of ECT were studied after per-treatment of 100 patients with lidocaine 1.5 mg/Kg (experimental group) and saline solution (control), using a double-blind, randomized clinical trial study. There were no sign...

Immediate hemodynamic effects of beta-adrenergic blockade with propranolol in normotensive and hypertensive man.

Immediate hemodynamic effects of beta-adrenergic blockade were determined in six normal subjects and 21 hypertensive patients following intravenous administration of propranolol. Arterial pressure was not reduced, but cardiac output fell by approximately 20% in both groups. Nevertheless, beta-adrenergic inhibition seemed to have different effects in the two groups: Propranolol produced a greate...
